Appraisal Institute Continuing Education

The Appraisal Institute offers classroom and online programs that can meet both state and Appraisal Institute continuing education (CE) requirements. Our classroom education programs are offered across the U.S. and our online education programs begin on the 1st and 15th of every month. To find Appraisal Institute classes, click here.

Please Note: This is a Q&A intended to provide general information about Appraisal Institute Continuing Education (CE), but the actual rules are contained in Regulation No. 10: Continuing Education and govern continuing education requirements. The Q&A may not include all information, options, requirements, and variations applicable to any particular person.

How many hours do I have to complete for my continuing education cycle?

Practicing Designated Members must complete 100 hours of continuing education for every five-year cycle, except for those members on a 100-Hour Recommended status. Designated Members on such status are strongly encouraged to complete 100 hours. Those that choose not to fulfill 100 hours will not be considered “continuing education completed” and must so affirm that they have not completed the program in their certification statement.

Practicing Associate Members must complete 70 hours of continuing education for every five-year cycle.


I’m an Associate Member. Must I complete 70 hours of continuing education every five years?

Yes. All practicing Associate Members are subject to continuing education requirements. The first cycle began July 1, 2010.


How many times in a cycle can I take a USPAP course and receive CE?

According to Regulation No. 10, the Appraisal Institute will recognize three USPAP courses within one cycle. USPAP is required for every five-year cycle and must be included in the 100 hours for Designated Members and the 70 hours for Associate Members.


Do I need to take the course, Business Practices and Ethics?

The Business Practices and Ethics course is required for every five-year cycle and must be included in the 100 hours for Designated Members and the 70 hours for Associate Members. View the schedule of upcoming courses.


What is the Advanced Continuing Education requirement?

The Advanced Continuing Education requirement must be met by both Designated Members with cycles ending 2011 and beyond and all Associate Members(who had not initial met their Standards and Ethics requirement at this time of this change). One of the options below must be completed every five-year cycle and must be included in the 100 hours for Designated Members and the 70 hours for Associate Members.

No option may be repeated in any subsequent continuing education cycle unless such option has been substantially revised, as determined by the Admissions and Designation Qualifications Committee.

ACE Requirement Options

OPTION #1: The Appraisal Curriculum Overview Course

  1. MAI, SRPA or SREA Designated members and general Associate members: Appraisal Curriculum Overview 2-Day Course (online)
  2. SRA, or RM Designated members and residential Associate members: Appraisal Curriculum Overview 1-Day Course (online)

OR:

OPTION #2: Any Appraisal Institute Level II Advanced Curriculum Course

MAI, SRPA, SREA, SRA, or RM Designated members and general or residential Associate members can choose from any one of the three  
Appraisal Institute Level II Advanced Curriculum courses

SRA, or RM Designated members and residential Associate members can take the
Real Estate Finance, Statistics and Valuation Modeling course (classroom or online)

OR:

OPTION #3: MAI, SRPA, SREA, RM, or SRA Designated and general or residential Associate members can complete any of the Appraisal Institute Professional Development Programs:

Valuation of Conservation Easements

Appraising Historic Preservation Easements

Litigation (please note that to get credit for this option you must complete three (3) separate classes)


*Please note: If you are a dually Designated Member, you must complete general ACE requirements.

If you are an Associate Member that is listed as both a general and a residential member, you must complete general ACE requirements.


Is each course in the Level II curriculum an Advanced Continuing Education (ACE) option for both general and residential members?

Yes. Each advanced course in the Level II curriculum may be applied as an option for a five-year continuing education cycle. Other courses not taken during a current cycle may be applied in subsequent continuing education cycles.


For what Appraisal Institute programs can I receive 1.25 CE credit?

The Appraisal Institute approves certain “advanced” Appraisal Institute courses, seminars and professional development programs, granting 1.25 CE credit for every hour taken. Status reports will reflect these programs with an asterisk (*). View the current list of approved programs.


Do you accept programs from outside providers?

The Appraisal Institute will accept continuing education from outside providers if the programs meet a number of requirements.

The topics covered in the program must be on our list of creditable topics, which can be found here: Creditable Topics.

Continuing education cannot be a home study or correspondence course.

Offering must be at least two hours in length.

For USPAP courses, the instructor must be AQB certified. The Appraisal Institute accepts USPAP up to three times per five-year CE cycle.

Continuing education credit will be given for up to 10 hours for each CE cycle for computer education for applications specific to the appraisal profession.

If the program meets the requirements listed above, simply log the program online from your "My Appraisal Institute" page or submit the certificate of completion to the Continuing Education department.


How do I view and add to my CE log?

To view your most up-to-date CE log or to add to your CE log, log in with your username and password and visit the My Designated Member CE Log or My Associate Member CE Log page. You may also access your log from your “My Appraisal Institute” page. To add a program, enter all required fields, citing the appropriate creditable topic. If you would like to have an updated copy of your log faxed, e-mailed or mailed to you, please contact the Continuing Education department.


What are carry-over hours and how do I add them to my CE log?

In Regulation No. 10, carry-over hours are defined as creditable hours earned in excess of those required in the current continuing education cycle, which, if earned during the last six months of the current cycle; they may be carried over into the next continuing education cycle.

Carry-over hours must be entered by the Continuing Education department. Please fax, e-mail or mail your certificates of completion.


I took a course with the Appraisal Institute but it isn't appearing on my CE log. Can you help?

Programs sponsored by the Appraisal Institute, either nationally on the chapter level, will automatically be added to your CE log and should appear within one week of the offering. If a program taken through the Appraisal Institute does not appear on your CE log after one week, please contact the Continuing Education department to determine the status of this offering.


How many CE hours can I take online?

All hours of continuing education hours can be taken online.


Can I receive CE credit for service in my chapter, region or at the national level?

Members can receive up to 25 hours of CE for service to the Appraisal Institute per CE cycle. National service will be submitted by the Chair. Chapters will submit chapter and regional service by completing the Committee Service Verification Form.


Can I receive CE credit for any service to the real estate appraisal profession?

Members can receive up to 10 hours of CE for service to the profession per CE cycle. Please submit proof of service to the Continuing Education department for consideration.


Do I need to keep my certification of completion?

Please make sure you keep any verification of attendance for each program you record in your CE Log through your previous cycle; both courses taken with AI or with other providers. The Appraisal Institute may request that you submit all documentation for programs submitted in your CE Log.


What is the exact wording of the CE Certification Statement that I should be including in my appraisal reports?

 

Designated Members must include:

Either

– As of the date of this report, I (or Designated Member(s) name(s)) have/has completed the continuing education program of the Appraisal Institute.

Or

– As of the date of this report, I (or Designated Member(s) name(s)) have not/has not completed the continuing education program of the Appraisal Institute.


Associate Members must include:

Either

– As of the date of this report, I (or Associate Member(s) name(s)) have/has completed the Standards and Ethics Education Requirement of the Appraisal Institute for Associate Members.

Or

– As of the date of this report, I (or Associate Member(s) name(s)) have/has not completed the Standards and Ethics Education Requirement of the Appraisal Institute for Associate Members.


Is the CE Certification Statement included on the “Find an Appraiser” directory?

The Appraisal Institute will be reinstating the CE Certification Statement back into the directory.

Beginning January 1, 2011, all practicing Designated and Associate Member listings will include the Standards and Ethics statements.

Beginning January 1, 2012, Designated Member listings will include the Continuing Education Completed/Not Completed statements.

Beginning July 1, 2015, Associate Member listings will begin to include the Continuing Education Completed/Not Completed statements.


What happens if I do not complete my CE requirements by my cycle end date?

Designated Members that do not complete CE requirements will face a one-year suspension period, after which if not complete will face membership termination.

Associate Members that do not complete CE requirements will face a six-month suspension period, after which if not complete will face membership termination.

Designated Members should submit all programs by December 31 in the year their cycle concludes.

Associate Members should submit all programs by June 30 in the year their cycle concludes.
